Reciprocity and Redistribution in Andean Civilizations: The 1969 Lewis Henry Morgan Lectures by John V. Murra, 2017.

Published by HAU Books, University of Chicago. Prepared by Freda Yancy Wolf and Heather Lechtman. 122 pages.

Purchase from publisher.

John V. Murra’s Lewis Henry Morgan Lectures, originally given in 1969, are the only major study of the Andean “avenue towards civilization.” Collected and published for the first time here, they offer a powerful and insistent perspective on the Andean region as one of the few places in which a so-called “pristine civilization” developed. Murra sheds light not only on the way civilization was achieved here—which followed a fundamentally different process than that of Mesopotamia and Mesoamerica—he uses that study to shed new light on the general problems of achieving civilization in any world region.

By Henry Tantaleán and César Astuhuamán, Editors, 2013

Published in Lima by Institut français d'études andines - IFEA and Institute of Andean Research – IAR. 627 pages.

An ambitious undertaking in crossing the boundaries between social science disciplines points to novel insights. Crossing disciplinary boundaries is not easy since archaeologists are not trained to read documents, and historians and social anthropologists may be uneasy when faced with precolumbian material remains. The task continues, but the initial efforts of the "Andean Encounter" in Cajamarca is presented in this volume. Chapters about Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Argentina were written by Segundo Moreno Yánez, Lorenzo Huertas Vallejos, Calogero Santoro, Jorge Hidalgo, Sonia Alconini, Veronica Williams, Ana María Lorandi, María Rostworowski, and several other authors. In Spanish.

Excerpt from introduction:

"The following original article by Gordon R.Willey, written in 2002, near the end of his life, and at the request of the editors of Andean Past, represents his reminiscences about his introduction to Peruvian archaeology in general and the Institute of Andean Research (IAR), in particular. It is part of our series on the history of institutions that have been important in Andean archaeology during the twentieth century. It follows my article on the history of the Northeast Conference on Andean Archaeology and Ethnohistory (NCAAE) published in Andean Past 6 (2000/01) and that of David L. Browmanon the Midwest Conference on Andean and Amazonian Archaeology and Ethnohistory in the same volume".
